Week 29 #WOTD – Peer pressure

No more Euro football but we have the Olympics to get our fix of goals, but we’re not focussing on either here. Watch Of The Day (WOTD) continues to bring you weekly highlights of the winners and losers in the FTSE20 league.

This week, the leaders took charge and those near the bottom proved why they are there!

Glencore (GLEN) extended their gap at the top of the league scoring a 2.5% gain for the week, only bettered by Anglo American’s (AAL) 3% gain. Ignoring recent commodity price weakness, the market is focussed on the long-term, especially with a positive Q2 report from AAL.

Reckitt Benckiser (RB), who are 18th, did nothing to help their position losing 4.4% in the week. This was thanks to their close peer Unilever (ULVR) who, after reporting disappointing results, lost 6.2% in the week moving down to 19th in the league.

That’s it! Everyone else had smaller gains or losses, Vodafone (VOD) scored 2.3% in their attempt to get back into positive gains for the year and Diageo (DGE) could not hold on to third place managing a 0.1% loss in the week.

What can entrepreneurs take from this weeks movements?

  1. Know who your peers are.
  2. Know what happens to your valuation/profit when a closely linked company has varying results.
  3. Know the same for your competition and how you can capitalise situations.
